MEQUON — On Friday, there will be an extended overnight full closure of I-43 northbound from Port Washington Road to Highland Road from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

"Crews are doing some drainage alterations that require concrete work, so they need the additional time for the concrete to cure," Wisconsin Department of Transportation Communications Manager Dan Sellers said.

The closure is part of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s major project to widen 14 miles of the freeway to three lanes in both directions from Silver Spring Drive in Glendale to Highway 60 in Grafton. The project includes adding a full interchange at Highland Road, as well as reconstructing five existing interchanges.

According to WisDot, the Mequon Road Interchange segment is the last major interchange in Ozaukee undergoing work, as it entered another phase of work in February involving the closing of the I-43 northbound off-and on-ramps at Mequon Road. Those ramps will remain closed to traffic through late summer, as traffic on I-43 northbound between just north of Donges Bay Road and Glen Oaks Lane has been shifted west onto the southbound lanes while crews reconstruct the northbound lanes.
